The Origin of Minnich Manufacturing & the Hydraulic Paving Vibrator

Minnich Manufacturing didn’t begin with a business plan. It began with a problem and one man who knew how to solve it.

In the 1960s, Roger Minnich was the VP of Sales for an Ohio-based concrete paving manufacturer who learned his way around the industry directly from contractors on the job. During that time, paving crews relied on high-cycle electric vibrators powered by generators. These vibrators ran at extremely high speeds, overheated often, and burned up regularly, leading to frequent downtime and costly replacements. It was a bulky and inefficient process, but Roger wasn’t convinced it had to stay that way.

Paving machines already carried hydraulic systems designed for steady, reliable power, and Roger saw an opportunity to remove unnecessary complexity and let the machine power itself. In 1968, he engineered a hydraulic paving vibrator driven by a motor with three gears that created hydrostatic balance. By operating smoothly at lower speeds, the design eliminated the overheating common to electric vibrators and dramatically extended their lifetime.

That same year, Roger started Minnich Manufacturing out of a gas station with two employees and a goal to transform the paving industry. From that small shop, they converted concrete paving machines from high-cycle electric vibrators to hydraulic vibrators. But the goal wasn’t to sell a single component— it was to solve an industry problem. Roger packed his tools into a white station wagon and traveled the country converting paving machines one by one. Each conversion took roughly three days and included a complete system—hydraulic vibrators, pumps, and Ford engines—installed directly on site.

The days were long, spent shoulder-to-shoulder with paving crews whose feedback resulted in realtime adjustments onsite. Roger built trust within the paving community and established a brand that became known for its pursuit of relationships and solutions.

In 1985, at the request of a contractor, Minnich built its first dowel-pin drill and, when demand grew, so did the garage. Over its first 25 years, Minnich’s original three-bay shop underwent five additions to accommodate the growth of the company. And when Roger’s son, Jim Minnich, was ready to take ownership, he did so with the same people-first, solution-forward philosophy his father hung his hat on. Under Jim’s leadership, Minnich introduced the industry’s first vibrator monitoring system, the company’s first remote-controlled dowel pin drill, and the Hornet—a compact drilling system with industry-leading safety features and efficiency.

In 2011, Minnich moved into its current manufacturing facility, adding 14,000 square feet and room for future growth. But what didn’t change was the company’s foundation. Through decades of evolution, Minnich has remained innovative, family-owned, and customer-driven.

Rob Minnich, Roger’s grandson and current president of Minnich Manufacturing, says the Minnich patriarchs instilled a culture of customer service above all else. “Whether it’s helping a contractor on the jobsite, developing safe, easy-to-use products, building trustworthy relationships, or answering a phone call before it rings twice, the customer comes first.”

From a gas station garage to jobsites across the country, Minnich’s story is proof that meaningful impact doesn’t start in boardrooms. It’s in the daily decisions to connect with, listen to, and work for others. Like Roger modeled from day one, Minnich believes Our People Make the Difference.
